The school dinners I remember best were those at my primary school. More specifically, I remember the large metal trays of sponge pudding served with custard. Sometimes the sponge and custard were chocolate flavoured; sometimes it was vanilla sponge and pink custard. It probably wasn't something that anyone today would call real custard, but I loved it. I still love 'fake' custard. I also remember semolina pudding with some jam in the middle. The bit with the jam was OK, but once that had gone you were in trouble. I don't remember anything about the main courses.

We'd eat lunch in the main hall of the school, which was also where two of the classrooms were when the hall wasn't being used for lunch. The classrooms had a large sliding divider that was pulled across during lessons. There was a kitchen off from the side of the hall, which was where the food was prepared and served by the school dinner ladies.
